sensoriale.
passo all’artista.

processo l’andamento temporale, dinamico e metamorfico
dalla fusione all’evaporazione, dalla rugiada all’erosione

rossa”).
</column-unit><column-unit slot="1">There is a form of representational art that does not merely imitate the things of the world, nor select only those fragments already considered aesthetically relevant. It does not sublimate their contemplation into a pure ideal of beauty — abstract, one might say — nor does it bend their depiction beneath an excessive burden of meaning. A profound imitative impulse is at work, driven by tireless curiosity and a continually renewed sense of wonder. This impulse can be traced, among historical precedents, from Leonardo’s attitude toward nature to a certain empirical tradition of seventeenth-century Dutch still-life painting, in its attempt to understand its subject precisely as it unfolds through the act of making. On an aesthetic level, it operates like a clinical examination or a laboratory experiment, meanwhile never losing the quintessential sensory quality. Precisely: aesthetic. In this latter case, the act of representation becomes an empirical instrument for attentively grasping the isolated and selected subject, in the hope that, through its translation into image, the rules sustaining the immediacy of the first visual encounter may be disclosed. In this imaginative and linguistic translation, the scientist gives way to the artist.

Federico Seppi’s subject matter lies in nature, and more specifically, in a myriad of views and micro-studies of the glacial ecosystem. His primary poetic concern resonates with the sense of wonder ignited by the encounter with the glacier — at times in its grandeur, at others in its poignant fragility, pursued through the most minute aspects of its constituent parts. The atmospheric sense of the landscape, which thickens the hazy perception of the water cycle’s constant becoming, gives way to a micro-analysis that dissects and brings into focus small extractions. They are true core samples, where vision itself is eclipsed by an infinitesimal contact with the ecosystem’s smallest units.

If Seppi therefore works through imitation, his declination of the principle of ars imitatur naturam does not unfold as a mere presentation of natural elements as they appear, but rather through an attempt to instill his process with the temporal, dynamic, and metamorphic movement of the laws of growth and entropy belonging to his chosen subject. Since the glacier is a living entity, shaped by the seasonal rhythm of the water cycle (from snow to ice, from melting to evaporation, from dew to geological erosion) the concept of continuous transformation is inevitably the driving force and ideal tension of his research. The pendulum swings, in this regard, between a representational mimesis that emerges, for example, in atmosphere (hic et nunc of the unrepeatable experience) or in abstraction (the identification of geometric forms and patterns, extracted and abstracted in themselves or in succession) and a processual mimesis. On the one hand, the impetus is identified in what could be defined as natura naturata: the phenomenon as it appears at the moment but examined and magnified as though observed through the lenses of a microscope capable of making present, almost a subject in the proper sense of the term, the isolated element. On the other hand, a natura naturans, a metamorphic processualism which is activated by chemically or phenomenologically responsive matter, up to the limit-point of a loss of the very coordinates of the original referent.

The second approach, as previously mentioned, is outlined in relation to two cases. In the first place, it is a processualism intrinsic to the pigmental materials used, due to the chemical reactivity of the metals laid upon two-dimensional surfaces. These landscapes present themselves as “living” entities, whose chromaticism, given by silver or copper leaf, shifts in response to the process of oxidation, at least until the artist decides to consolidate an outcome by fixing a shielding varnish: this possibility is sometimes consciously not pursued, and the work may continue its course. A second modality is linked to a phenomenological recirculation that views the work as a variable of a function that includes among its significant coordinates external elements, such as light conditions, the context of placement, and point of view. This is the case with the reflective surfaces — quadrangular segments scaled to the human body and at times architecturally self-supporting — which bring onto the vertical plane of the wall a shifting, sinuous segment of anchor ice (the anchor ice is a formation that solidifies beneath flowing water), or nivalis (a unicellular alga that gives high-altitude ice a specific pigmentation, causing the phenomenon known as “red snow”).
</column-unit></column-set>
